Peanut Butter Banana Chocolate Smoothie: January 15th.

Because there's nothing wrong with that statement. | SPG 31 Days of Smoothies

True Story: I have a lot of true stories. Thankfully, my life is too weird to make anything up.

Circa 2008, I was eating a lot of bananas. I was working as a counselor between a lot of sites, so my car was basically my office. That didn't leave a lot of room for mealtime, so I needed something filling and portable. Enter bananas. Full of potassium, resistant starch, natural sugars, and easy to carry, they can keep you on the go for a pretty good while.

Only problem was, I got really sick of bananas.

One morning, I got in the car and unpeeled my banana, only to feel a very distinct "I DO NOT want to eat this thing" vibe. So I took a selfie reflecting that feeling.

It's still a classic among my friends.

These days, me and bananas have mended fences. Once I became a runner, they became indispensable after races. After my 1st half-marathon, I even opened one with my teeth because the one I chose didn't have that "easy to peel" nub. Plus, I had just run 13.1 miles straight for the first time in my life. I was kind of out of it.

And frozen bananas have become indispensable in my smoothies. They provide a creamy texture without the classic banana flavor, unless that's something I want.

When I choose bananas, I do not choose ones with lots of brown spots on their skin, so they're not overripe. If I want a banana flavor in my smoothie, like with this one, or my banana pancake smoothie, then I'll let it ripen for a day or so before freezing.

No longer avoidant, I offer you this smoothie so that you, too, may love and accept bananas. Unless you already do. So then just make the thing.

Peanut Butter Banana Chocolate Smoothie

  • 1 cup milk of choice

  • 1 serving protein powder of choice

  • 1/2 of a medium frozen banana

  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter (or other nut butter, or sunflower seed butter)

  • 2 tablespoons raw cacao or cocoa powder

  • 1-2 pitted Medjool dates (or 2-4 Deglet dates): you decide your sweetness level!

  • 1 tiny pinch salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (OPTIONAL)

Make It:

  • All ingredients go in the blender.

  • Blend until smoooooooooooth.

I'm so glad we're friends again, dear banana.
