Chocolate Coffee Walnut Smoothie: January 6th.

You know all those words go together. | SPG 31 Days of Smoothies

There are certain times where you look in the fridge and go, "well, what do I make a smoothie out of NOW?!"

No? Just me? Ok then.

When I develop recipes and share recipes, those recipes are made from things I like. Being a foodthusiast, I just always liked combining stuff and seeing what comes out of it.

Which is how this smoothie was born.

I wanted something with a deep flavor that wasn't too sweet. I love chocolate and I love coffee. Those two flavors together are magical and deep. What goes with magical, deep flavors? Well, walnuts, of course. But let me tell you about the star of the show:

The Coffee.

Coffeeeeeee I sing my song of love to theeee....but I can't sing. Oh well.

I love coffee, and I love adding coffee to smoothies. I used to use my own cold brew, other cold brew, instant espresso, and then when I started buying my own beans, I just skipped the middleman and started throwing the beans directly into the blender. This here is an exact representation of what I use as the base of the smoothie (done up for the 80s). 1 teaspoon coffee beans. Think of this smoothie as a chocolate covered espresso bean, but in drinkable form. Go git it.

After that, does anything even matter? Oh, right, the recipe...

  • 8 oz milk of choice

  • 1 pitted Medjool date (or 2 Deglet dates)

  • 1 serving protein powder (whatever you use: 1 scoop, etc.)

  • 1 tsp coffee beans, ground coffee, instant espresso, or 1/4 cup brewed coffee

  • 1 tbsp walnuts

  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder or raw cacao powder

  • 1/4 c fresh or frozen spinach

  • 1/4 of a large frozen banana

  • Tiny pinch of salt

  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract and 1/4 tsp almond extract (BOTH OPTIONAL)

  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon

Make It:

  • Put it all in a blender.

  • Blend until smooth(ie) and cream(ie).

  • Drink it.

Note:

You may notice by this point that I often use spinach in my smoothies. That is not a mistake. I always have frozen spinach on hand and to me, it just adds a nice hit of fiber, starts my day with a vegetable, and blends super-seamlessly into smoothies. It's a win-win-win for the chlorophyll set.

Also of note: By this point, you may realize that these smoothies are totally customizable to suit any and all of your tastes. If you have food sensitivities or allergies, please do leave out anything that would trouble you and/or substitute your own add-ins to make your own custom blend. That's what cooking is all about!

Finally:

I just hope you enjoy this thing. I mean, look at it.

It's so good, it floats in SPACE.
