Apple Banana Ginger Green Smoothie: January 1st.

Make it a Green New Year | SPG 31 Days of Smoothies

Truth be told, I don't LOOOOOOVE smoothies. But I DO love my Vitamix.

I'm joshing. I love smoothies just fine and I openly adore my Vitamix. It's red.

I even once tried to make my own V-8 juice when I was ten. All I did was chop up vegetables, put them in a glass of water, and stir. The thing was, they didn't magically turn into a beautiful juice. I could chop vegetables when I was ten, but I could not for the life of me figure out that the missing link was using a blender. I just thought if I stirred hard enough, I could be a blender (?). I'm guessing. It's been awhile since I was ten.

Smoothies have come a long way since then; far beyond "let's just throw a ton of fruit, sugar, and trash in a blender and call it healthy." They are portable, easy, and totally customizable. For someone like me who both runs and is often on the run, they are a lifesaver.

So I thought I would challenge myself by posting a blog every day in January 2025 (31 days in total!) with a smoothie recipe. You, my dear Reader, will not be challenged. All of the work has been done for you. All you have to do is select your favorites, make them, and enjoy them.

So here we go!

Smoothie the 1st: Apple Banana Ginger Green Smoothie

  • 1 cup milk of choice (I use unsweetened plain almond milk)

  • 1 small apple, chopped (I use Granny Smith, the SPG Apple of Choice)

  • 1/4 of a large frozen banana

  • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen spinach (one large handful if using fresh)

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 tiny pinch of salt

  • 1 serving vanilla or natural protein powder (depends on the powder. I use ground hemp seed powder and my serving is 4 tablespoons).

  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (OPTIONAL)

  • 1/2 tablespoon chia seeds (again, OPTIONAL).

Make It

  • Blend all ingredients until the smoothie is smooth. See what I did there? Then, enjoy it. Particularly on a, like, 60-degree day in the winter on the East coast. Whatever.
